Perth Symphony Orchestra is bringing an energetic and inclusive rhythm and movement workshop to Karratha, inviting community members to explore the foundations of music through beat, movement, and shared creative experience.

This hands on workshop will guide participants through the core elements of rhythm, including pulse, tempo, coordination, and groove. Using body percussion, movement, voice, and accessible percussion instruments, participants will learn how rhythm works, how to stay in time, and how individual parts come together to create a powerful collective sound.

The session begins with simple exercises to help participants feel and recognise the beat, using clapping, stepping, and movement. From there, the group will build layered rhythm patterns, learning how to listen, respond, and work together as an ensemble. Participants will explore concepts such as call and response, rhythmic patterns, and dynamic contrast, developing both musical skills and confidence along the way.

Movement plays a central role in the workshop, helping participants connect physically with rhythm and understand how music and the body work together. These activities support coordination, focus, and wellbeing, while creating a fun and supportive environment for creative expression.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have contributed to a shared rhythm performance, experiencing the excitement and connection that comes from making music together.

This workshop is open to all ages and abilities, with no prior musical experience required. It forms part of Perth Symphony Orchestra’s ongoing work in the Pilbara, supporting community wellbeing, creativity, and connection through accessible and meaningful musical experiences.
